MONTREAL - Lisette Mailhot and her husband, Bob, were found dead in their home by police who went to the house after a call from worried neighbours.  The police found Lisette, 60, in the basement and Bob, 68, in the garage with a gunshot wound to his forehead.  (Montreal Gazette)

WINDSOR - A 57-year-old man was charged with the second-degree murder of his wife after the couple’s children returned home from school to find their mother slain.  Melkioro Gahungu was arrested by police at 5465 Reginald St where the family lived.  Dead is Maria Nzokilandevi, 53.   (Windsor Star)

PLAISANCE - The Sûreté du Québec charged a youth and an 18-year-old man with first-degree murder after the death of an elderly man in Plaisance.  Police said that the victim was Jacques Jong, 88, but did not say how he died.  Jean-Philippe Simard Desjardins, 18, was arraigned in a Gatineau. WINNIPEG - Virginia Hernando claims she had no choice but to kill her husband.  The 61-year-old Winnipeg woman began her manslaughter trial by pleading not guilty on the basis of self-defence. NANAIMO - A 29-year-old Alberta woman wanted in connection with the death of her 16-month-old daughter in Medicine Hat, Alta. in 2006 is now in custody in Nanaimo.  Lisa Hope, also known as Lisa Guerin.  Hope's daughter, Summer, 16 months, died in April 2006 after drinking methadone that belonged to her father, Jonathan Hope. Man to stand trial

OTTAWA - Mahmoud Kayem, 24, was charged last June in connection with the August 2006 killing of 22-year-old Mohamed Zalal, whose body was found in a farmer’s field near Vars.  Zalal, a known member of the Ledbury Banff Crips street gang, had been shot in the head.  (Ottawa Citizen)   PREVIOUS:  2 charged in gang killing

TORONTO - A convicted killer was charged with murder after a man's body was found in a parking lot on the north side of Barrymore Furniture Galleries.   Edward Scheniman, 41, has been charged with first-degree murder.  Scheniman pleaded guilty to the August, 1990 slashing death of 27-year-old Stanley Simon George. MISSISSAUGA - On June 2 police found Andres David Buritica-Marin, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound. Police announced a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for 32-year-old Toronto resident Kevin Johnson. Suspect confessed

TORONTO - Investigators have a 23-year-old man in custody in connection with the death of a 73-year-old man. The victim was found in his apartment at 85 Emmett Ave.  He had been stabbed multiple times.  The suspect allegedly made his confession to a priest, who convinced the man to contact police.  David Fitzpatrick, 23, of no fixed address, has been charged with Second Degree Murder. Boy arrested

Murder by boat

DANVILLE, KY - A Canadian doctor living in the US has been charged with killing his Nova Scotia wife during a bizarre incident on a Kentucky lake, where he allegedly tossed the woman overboard and then ran her down - in full view of several witnesses - with a propeller-driven pontoon boat.  Dr. Steven Hall, 46, was arrested after the death of Isabel Hall, 49, on Herrington Lake southwest of the city of Lexington. 16-year-old murder case resumes

EDMONTON - Michael Joseph Gaston Desmarais was charged 16 years ago with the first-degree murder of an Edmonton man, but his first court date for the charge wasn't until Tuesday.  RCMP charged Desmarais with the murder of Gordon Mills in 1993, but had to wait for Desmarais to finish serving time for a murder conviction in the US before they could proceed with the charge. (Edmonton Journal)

Mystery solved

GRANBY - Alain Bernard, 45, a father of four, was shot in the back of his head while doing his crossword puzzle and watching television in his Granby home on Aug. 31, 1987.  Tristan-Anthony Bernard, 41, was arrested along with his cousin, Patrice Bernard, 41, and his friend Alain Béliveau, 44, by the SQ's unsolved crimes division. BARRIE - Michelle Simon, 45, was taken to RVH but died from her injuries.  According to police, Daniel Simon, her estranged husband was arrested at the scene.  The couple had been separated for eight years.  (Barrie Advance)

Having a bad day

WINNIPEG - Phillip Rykyta died because Kelly Ann Bouchie was having a bad day.  A 62-year-old former jockey fallen on hard times, Rykyta was beaten to death with a brick on June 10, 2006 following an ill-fated encounter with Bouchie in a lane behind the Northern Hotel.   Bouchie, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. Man set on fire dies

TORONTO - A Toronto man who was doused with gasoline and set on fire during an argument, suffering severe burns to more than half of his body, has died in hospital.  The 43-year-old victim, whom neighbours knew as Robert, was in the backyard of his two-storey townhouse unit on Jasper Ave when he was attacked. LA LOCHE, SK - Mitchell Don Lemaigre. a 20-year-old man from the Clearwater River Dene Nation appeared in provincial court charged with manslaughter in connection with a stabbing death on the reserve.  The victim, 30-year-old Palmer Nicky Piche, was found dead outside a home on the First Nation. LA RONGE - Blake David Norman, 19, is charged with three counts of manslaughter as well as one count of arson with disregard for human life.  On May 26, Justin Paul Charles and Marsha McKenzie as well as their four-month-old son Jeremy Charles, died as a result of a fire in their apartment building. Charge laid in stabbing

CALGARY - Emergency crews called to a stabbing in the 1200-block of Macleod Tr found a man with major injuries near the front entrance of the brick building. Douglas Joseph Young, 39, of Calgary, died later in hospital.  Police have charged Henry Vincent Bosklopper, 46, also of Calgary, with second-degree murder. TORONTO - A man who killed his girlfriend while her 10-year-old son tried to save her smiled at her brother in court after being sentenced to life in prison. A jury acquitted Vaughn Maxwell Wilson, 22, in February of first-degree murder but found him guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder in Dale Mapstone's stabbing. Judge dismisses charges

CARLETON PLACE - Autopsies are expected today on a woman and her 11-month-old daughter.  Police also discovered the body of a 28-year-old man in Montreal. They say he apparently committed suicide in a downtown hotel.  Police said foul play was suspected in the deaths of Kerry Freda Walters, 25, and her baby, Starla, who were found dead in Carleton Place. TORONTO - A Riverdale man has been charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of his 27-year-old sister.   Police allege that Abdirasak Hassan, 24, attacked his sister, Jamila, stabbing her many times in the chest. Man charged after 2 stabbings

TORONTO - Samuel Oliveira Junior, 46, was found stumbling near a streetcar in the Brock Ave. and Dundas St. West area.  Soon after, police were alerted to a second stabbing victim in hospital. Youth arrested

STONY PLAIN - A 16-year-old teen has been charged by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in connection with the death of two girls who died of an ecstasy overdose in Alberta.  RCMP in Stony Plain made the arrest four days after Leah House and Trinity Dawn Bird and two other teenage girls became seriously ill after ingesting the drug.  Bird and House died earlier this week.  (CTV)  PREVIOUS:  Overdose death    6 girls overdose

Hired gun admits to killing

CALGARY - For two hours, hired killer Justin Brandon Anderson lay in wait in a vehicle parked at Northland Village mall, clutching a 9-mm Glock semi-automatic handgun.  When drug dealer Jaspreet Singh Rahal, 25, emerged after working out at Gold's Gym, the vehicle's driver pointed him out as the target.  Anderson fired nine shots, pumping seven of them into Rahal's torso. TORONTO - Once again, Toronto Police are turning to security cameras as they investigate the city's latest homicide.  Kaser St. Louis, 24, was killed Feb. 28. Emergency crews found St. Louis at 1176 Kennedy Rd, just north of Lawrence Ave, around 3am. He had been shot in the chest and died in hospital.  (CityNews)

Illicit affair

Daughters dead; mother hospitalized and father missing

LAVAL - The girls' father Giuseppe De Vito, is a suspected mafia member who has been missing since 2006 after a mafia roundup in Ontario and Quebec.   Adele Sorella, 43, was arrested around 3am Wednesday after her SUV hit a pole on rang du Bas-St-Francois Street.  The bodies of the girls, Sabrina, 8, and Amanda, 9, were found inside the family home in Laval's Duvernay district by family members who called 911 around 4pm.  (CTV)  PREVIOUS:  Mother arrested    Depressed mom arrested

Victim identified

100 MILE HOUSE - A woman shot during a domestic dispute in 100 Mile House died en route to hospital, just hours after an RCMP officer shot and killed the man involved in the incident.  Police said the 56-year-old woman ran to a neighbour's home, saying she'd been shot.
